Har Ki Pauri, Haridwar
Welcome to the ghat of legends
Haridwar is intimately connected with Har Ki Pauri, a spiritual landmark situated along the banks of the sacred Ganga river, which attracts devotees from near and far. The name Har Ki Pauri literally means the feet (pauri) of Lord Vishnu (Har signifies God). This site is a holy ghat by the Ganga river, famous for being the precise location where the Ganga departs the mountains.
It is said that during the Vedic era, Lord Vishnu manifested at this very site, leaving his footprints in the river’s waters. Within Har Ki Pauri lies a region known as Brahmakund, where the evening Ganga Aarti is performed. This is the exact location where drops of Amrit (the nectar of immortality) fell from the skies while being carried by Garuda (the vehicle of Lord Vishnu) during the Samudra Manthan. It is also believed that the holy trinity—Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh—have graced Brahmakund with their divine presence.
The immense spiritual significance of this place makes it the focal point for large Hindu gatherings, hosting the grand Kumbh Mela and Ardh Kumbh Mela, where pilgrims gather in large numbers to engage in rituals and take a holy dip to purify themselves of their sins. Over the years, widespread extensions and renovations have been made to the ghats to accommodate the influx of visitors during the Kumbh Melas.
Surrounded by the gentle whispers of the mountain breezes and decorated with the fragrant offerings of marigold garlands, Har Ki Pauri serves as a sanctuary where faith and devotion unite in a captivating display. As sunset approaches, the evening aarti illuminates the sky with a tapestry of dancing flames, creating a mesmerizing sight that transcends time and space.
Experience the splendor of Ganga Aarti
Har Ki Pauri is one of the select sacred spots in India where one can experience the enchantment of the Ganga Aarti. If you are an early riser, you can witness the Mangala Aarti (the morning Aarti), and if not, the Shringar Aarti (the evening Aarti) awaits you.
No matter which you attend, the Ganga Aarti is a breathtaking experience. Devotees and pilgrims, their faces glowing with reverence, gather eagerly, ready to behold this captivating event. As twilight settles over the sacred grounds, the sound of conch shells echoes through the air, announcing the start of the divine ceremony. Ancient and harmonious priestly chants rise like incense toward the heavens, carrying the prayers and wishes of countless souls. Then, as if by magic, the darkness gives way to the flickering flames of a thousand oil lamps, each a symbol of hope and devotion. The riverbanks come alive with the rhythm of the priests’ movements as they weave intricate patterns in the air, paying respect to the sacred river.
And so, enveloped in the soft glow of the lamps and the gentle touch of the evening breeze, the Ganga Aarti unfolds, its magic lingering in your heart long after the flames have faded and night transitions to dawn.
The origins of the ghat
The establishment of the riverfront at Har Ki Pauri reaches back to ancient times. According to legend, King Vikramaditya erected the ghat in memory of his beloved brother, Bharthari, a devout follower of Lord Shiva who meditated at this very location. Following Bharthari's passing, his mortal remains were entrusted to the holy waters of the river. To honor his brother's deep devotion, King Vikramaditya ordered the construction of a ghat, a lasting tribute to Bharthari’s spiritual heritage.
