The tallest building globally, yet without a foundation!

Rewind to the year 1799, and you will find Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh of the Kachhwaha Rajput dynasty, who chose to construct this extraordinarily unique palace as an extension of the women's quarters.

At that time, purdah (a religious and social practice of gender separation) was the norm, so with the assistance of Lal Chand Ustad, the Maharaja crafted a unique lattice called the Aakash Patal Jali, allowing the women to observe the public near Johari Bazaar, excitedly chatting and bargaining with shopkeepers and craftsmen, while remaining unseen by passersby. The latticed windows also provided a view towards the central boulevard where royal and religious parades would proceed.

Gaining entry to the Hawa Mahal is an experience in itself, as curiously, there is no front entrance, only a rear access point. Instead of stairs, there are ramps leading to the upper levels of the tallest building in the world.

Yes, you read that correctly. The Hawa Mahal, standing at five stories, is the tallest building in the world—without a foundation. This architectural feat is achievable because it curves and leans at an angle of 87 degrees.

Wonders on every level

The first floor features the Sharad Mandir, adorned with vibrant cultural glasswork for autumn festivities. The second floor is home to Ratan Mandir. The last three stories are comprised of Vichitra Mandir, Prakash Mandir, and Hawa Mandir.

Inside lies a museum showcasing Rajasthani miniature art; outside, a lively marketplace fills the area with stalls selling handmade jewelry, artisan-crafted home décor, and the region's celebrated silver jewelry.

Pretty in pink

In 1799, the palace was constructed using exquisite local pink sandstone. Fast-forward a few decades, and Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, was scheduled to visit. Pink was deemed the color of hospitality, leading the Maharaja to paint the entire city in a romantic, dusky pink shade to welcome him. The prince and queen admired the color, dubbing Jaipur the 'Pink City'.

A law was enacted making it illegal to paint buildings in any color other than Jaipur Pink, preserving Jaipur's identity as the 'Pink City'.
