white and gold temple under blue sky

Shanti Stupa, Ladakh

A stunning spiritual site

Situated on the Chanspa hill, which offers a view of the beautiful Ladakh Valley, Shanti Stupa is an impressive white-domed monument against the backdrop of a clear blue sky, representing a symbol of global peace.

Elevated above the town of Leh, this remarkable stupa attracts thousands of visitors and followers due to its cultural importance and the breathtaking views it presents.

The vision for this magnificent structure was conceived by Nichidatsu Fujii, also known as Fuji Guruji, in 1914 to celebrate 2,500 years of Buddhism. Together with Tibetan and Japanese monks and the esteemed Kushok Bakula, the Lama of Ladakh, he meticulously executed this vision of unity.

The stupa was constructed in 1991 with the oversight of Bhikshu Gyomyo Nakamura, a respected Buddhist Bhikshu from Japan, culminating in its grand inauguration by Tenzin Gyatso, the Dalai Lama.

You will need to ascend 500 steps to reach this site, but once there, you are greeted with a breathtaking sight as the stunning views of Leh’s charming township and the majestic Himalayas unfold before you.

Exploring the stupa

The Shanti Stupa is designed as a two-tiered structure, accessed via winding staircases. At its base, you will encounter revered Buddha relics and a photograph of the Dalai Lama—making this stupa a genuinely sacred site for Buddhists.

Climbing the first set of stairs brings you to the first level, where you will find a Dharmachakra, reminiscent of the white stripe seen on the Indian national flag. Accompanied by two elegant deer, this symbolic wheel showcases a radiant portrayal of Lord Buddha, resplendent in golden shades, seated upon a pedestal.

The second level reveals a vivid representation of the life journey of Buddha. From his birth to the remarkable triumph over darkness during meditation, culminating in his transition into nirvana, each significant moment is intricately illustrated in vibrant colors. Among this collection of sacred relics, images of a meditating Buddha radiate serenity, inviting pilgrims to partake in the blessings of the Enlightened One.
